UT Press is accepting applications for its 12th publishing fellowship, which provides for a year of experience in book publishing for a graduate of UT Austin; its objective is to help prepare Fellows for careers in book and journal publishing, with an emphasis on scholarly publishing.

The fellowship begins September 1, 1998 and ends August 31, 1999. Training will be intensive in one area (Editorial, Production, or Rights and Permissions) with exposure to and instruction in the operations of the other departments. Preference will be given to UT Austin applicants with advanced degrees or to those who can demonstrate advanced study or work experience beyond a baccalaureate. Editorial finalists will be given editorial tests; Design/Production finalists will be asked to present their design portfolios; and Rights and Permissions finalists should have aptitude for the sale of literary properties and an interest in or understanding of publishing contracts. Several months prior to completion, the Press will notify a number of scholarly and commercial publishers of the Fellow’s impending availability; the Fellow will also attend the annual meeting of the Association of American University Presses. The Fellowship does not provide academic credits, though there is a stipend. Deadline is March 16; application forms are available at UT Press (at I-35 and Manor Road) or can be mailed upon request. The name of the 1998-99 Fellow will be announced by May 15.
