Austin historian and novelist James Haley has spent 15 years researching the life of Sam Houston. Now we have the finished product: Sam Houston from University of Oklahoma Press. Haley will be at BookPeople on Thursday, May 16, at 7pm to read from the book and to talk about why he finds some recently published writing about Houston too revisionist to do any good… Also on May 16 is the Writers’ League of Texas’ “Writers at the UT Club” event from 7 to 9pm at the UT Club in the Memorial Stadium on campus. Scott Blackwood, Kathy Hepinstall, Tom Doyal, Suzy Spencer, and Liz Carpenter, among others, will speak. Reservations recommended. Call 499-8914 for more info… The Texas Monthly reading group has chosen Jan Reid‘s The Bullet Meant for Me, his account of being shot in Mexico and recovering, uncertainly at first. The group will meet on Wednesday, May 29, at 7pm.

The Austin Poetry Slam Season Finals hosted by Mike Henry (the Slam-off) will be held at Ego’s, Thursday May 16, 7:30pm.
