* Congratulations to the winners of the 1995 Violet Crown Books Awards! On
December 1, the Austin Writers’ League honored eight Austin-based writers. Tina
Juarez was the winner in the fiction category for Call No Man Master.
Nancylee Novell’s The Underground Stream won the Nonfiction Award, and
Debra Monroe’s A Wild, Cold State won the literary book award. Other
books and authors cited were Jeff Abbott for The Only Good Yankee;
William Adler for Land of Opportunity; Jewel Morgan for Beyond
Telling
; Turk Pipkin for Born of the River; and Daniel Reveles for
Enchiladas, Rice and Beans.

* FRI, DEC 8: Perry A, author of People Are Just Desserts, will be at
Borders to ask her favorite question, “What’s your favorite dessert?,” 7pm.
Dessert, of course, will be served… Neal Meili and Austin Poets will
celebrate the release of Incongruous on Congress,a compilation of poems,
prose, and art from 56 local poets, Book People, 7pm. An appearance by Letha
Woods, author of Color Me Beautiful, 7:30pm, follows…

* SAT, DEC 9: Lucinda Hutson kicks off the holidays with an appearance for her
new book Tequila: Cooking With the Spirit of Mexico, at Book People,
noon… The doyenne of Texas politics, Liz Carpenter, comes to Barnes &
Noble for a talk and to sign her latest book, Unplanned Parenthood,
noon-3pm… An “informal” appearance of John Berendt, author of Midnight in
the Garden of Good and Evil
, will take place at Bookstop Lincoln Village,
between noon and 5pm… Mehdi Alavi will be appear at Waldenbooks Barton Creek,
1pm, and at Waldenbooks Lakeline, 4pm, for a signing of his book, O
God!
, which explores dialogue between people of Jewish and Islamic faiths.
Alavi completes his appearances that day with one at Book People, 2pm, and at
Barnes & Noble, 7pm… Letha Woods come to Bookstop Lincoln Village for a
signing and discussion of her book, Color Me Beautiful, 1:30pm…
Elizabeth Dearing Morgan will be at Waldenbooks Lakeline to sign her children’s

author Charles Meyer will sign his new book, Blessed Are the Merciless,
at Adventures in Crime and Space, 2-4pm… Dr. Louis Jacobs will be at Borders
