* SUN, DEC 15: Shelley Fisher Fishkin will appear at Bookstop Central Park to
celebrate the dual publication of her latest book, Lighting Out for the
Territory: Reflections on Mark Twain and American Culture, and The
Oxford Mark Twain, a 29-volume collection of Twain’s works which she
edited. Also in attendance will be Ray Sapirstein, contributor to The Oxford
Mark Twain. The event runs 2-4pm…
* FRI, DEC 20: Kirby Warnock returns to Borders to sign his book Texas
Cowboy, a collection of tales about his grandfather, 7:30pm. He’ll also do
some rope tricks and tell stories…The UT Performing Arts Center and
Texas Folklife Resources present Cowboy Christmas, an evening of cowboy
music and poetry featuring Don Edwards, Don Walser, and the Hays County Gals

* ONGOING: The Austin Writers’ League (AWL) is taking entries for two awards
programs. The Young Texas Writers’ Scholarship program is open to Texas High
School students, awarding 12 scholarships in the areas of poetry, short story,
essay, and journalism. The Teddy Book Award is a $1,000 prize for the best
children’s book written by an AWL member. Authors may join the AWL at the time
of entry. Entries are due by Jan. 31. Call 499-8914…

Half Price Books has produced a children’s short story collection titled Say
Goodnight to Illiteracy, the proceeds of which will benefit literacy
programs. Entries for the 1997 volume will be accepted this fall, due by Dec.
31 of this year. Also, Half Price’s “Just Read” program has been expanded to
include “Just Draw” program, wherein every time a child draws a book character
on a Half Price bookmark, Half Price will donate a book to a national literacy
project and the bookmark will be displayed at Half Price through Mar. 1. Say
Goodnight retails at Half Price for $2.98…
