Borders and the Austin
Writers’ League (AWL) will host a Writers Rave at 7:30pm. Published AWL members
will participate in a special block signing, including mystery writer Jeff
Abbott, author of Distant Blood. The “rave” is in conjunction with AWL
Benefit Day, wherein a portions of Borders’ sales for the day go to the League.

At Book People: Collin Wilcox Paxton, whom movie fans may
remember as Mayella Violet Ewell from To Kill a Mockingbird, will
perform storylines and sing three songs from her book Papa’s Angels: A
Christmas Story,
at 3pm; local author Dr. Ted Edwards will sign copies of
his new book, Power Aging, at 6pm; and Austinite Stan Biderman will read
from and discuss his first book, Everything Changes: A Spiritual
Journey,
7:30pm.

* SUN, DEC 8: Bill Crider presents his new Mike Gonzo & the Almost
Invisible Man
at 3pm at Book People…

Andrew S. White will sign copies of
his book The Best Bike Rides in Texas at the grand opening of the new
Whole Earth Provisions Co. location at 1014 N. Lamar, 2-4pm.

* WED, DEC 11: Shelia Liermann will be at Book People at 7pm to promote her
Famous Friends of the Wolf Cookbook.

* THU, DEC 12: Susan Tucker promotes her The Soul of the Writer with a
45-minute workshop and a question-and-answer session afterwards. She
will be at Book People at 7pm.

* ONGOING: The Austin Writers’ League (AWL) is taking entries for two awards
programs. The Young Texas Writers’ Scholarship program is open to Texas High
School students, awarding 12 scholarships in the areas of poetry, short story,
essay, and journalism. The Teddy Book Award is a $1,000 prize for the best
children’s book written by an AWL member. Authors may join the AWL at the time
of entry. Entries are due by Jan. 31, 1997. Call 499-8914…

Shelby Hearon:
Now and Another Time
is an exhibition celebrating the literary career of
the novelist and UT alumna from her first novel to the 1996 publication of her
15th. Through January 31 in the Wrenn Room on the seventh floor of the Harry
Ransom Humanities Research Center…

Half Price Books has produced a children’s
short story collection titled Say Goodnight to Illiteracy, the proceeds
of which, as you might have guessed, will benefit literacy programs. Entries
for the 1997 volume are due by December 31. Say Goodnight retails at
Half Price for $2.98.
