SAT, NOV 30: Science fiction author and former Austin Chronicle contributor
Mark Leon will read from and sign copies of his latest work, Unified Fields,
at 2pm at Book People. Unified Fields is the third in his series,
which includes Mindsurfer and The Gaia War… Barnes & Noble
Westlake will host A Taste of Texas: Two Austin Legends, combining a
booksigning by Eddie Wilson for Threadgill’s: The Cookbook and a
performance by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the former host of Threadgill’s “Sittin’
& Singin’ & Supper” sessions, 2:30-5pm.
* MON, DEC 2: Presentations made in the “Feminist Family Values Forum,” held in
Austin last May and featuring Angela Davis, Gloria Steinem, Mar�a
Jim�nez, and Mililani Trask, are now available in a book published by
Plain View Press. Book People will sponsor a reception with readings from the
book at 7pm.
* TUE, DEC 3: Presented by one of the participants in Austin’s nationally
ranked Slam Team, Genevieve’s Poetry Slam resumes at the Electric Lounge
at 8:30pm. The winner gets $50 and the audience enjoys the sadistic pleasure of

* FRI, DEC 6: Writer James Crumley will sign copies of Bordersnakes: A
Novel at Bookstop Central Park, 7-9pm.
* SAT, DEC 7: Bookstop Central Park will have Kathleen Kaska signing copies of
What’s Your Agatha Christie I.Q.?: 1,001 Puzzling Questions About the
World’s Most Beloved Mystery Writer, 2-4pm… Borders and the Austin
Writers’ League (AWL) will host a Writers Rave at 7:30pm. Published AWL
members, including mystery writer Jeff Abbott, author of Distant Blood, will participate in a special block signing. The “rave” is in
conjunction with AWL Benefit Day, wherein a portions of Borders’ sales for the

* BLURBS: Austinite Janet Martin is the second place winner in the third
quarter of the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future. Martin, a UT graduate,
recieved a cash award of $750, and her winning submission will be published in
the L. Ron Hubbard presents Writers of the Future anthology from Bridge
Publications.
* ONGOING: The Austin Writers’ League (AWL) will be awarding more than $50,000
in literature grants in 1997. Two types of grants are available: project grants
up to $2,500 and operating grants up to $5,000. Individuals and organizations,
including college programs outside the regular academic program, may apply.
After reading the guidelines, applicants should submit a brief letter of intent
to the AWL by Dec. 1, 1996. Call 499-8914…
Shelby Hearon: Now and Another
Time is an exhibition celebrating the literary career of the novelist and
UT alumna from her first novel to the 1996 publication of her 15th. Showing
through January 31 in the Wrenn Room on the seventh floor of the Harry Ransom
Humanities Research Center…
Shouting in the Evening: British Theater,
1956-96, is a major exhibition exploring the creative impulses and
performances that shaped the last 40 years of British theater, looking at the
works of Samuel Beckett, Caryl Churchill, David Hare, Joe Orton, John Osborne,
Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Timberlake Wertenbaker and others. In the Leeds
Gallery on the fourth floor of the Flawn Academic Center, through January 31…
Half Price Books has produced a children’s short story collection titled Say
Goodnight to Illiteracy, the proceeds of which, as you might have guessed,
will benefit literacy programs. The 22 stories include “The Boy Who Couldn’t Go
to Sleep” by Austinite Lloyd Mardis. Entries for the 1997 volume will be
accepted this fall, due by December 31 of this year. Also, Half Price’s “Just
Read” program has been expanded to include the “Just Draw” program, wherein
every time a child draws a book character on a Half Price bookmark, Half Price
will donate a book to a national literacy project and the bookmark will be
displayed in Half Price stores through March 1. Say Goodnight retails at
Half Price locations for $2.98…
