UT Press Fellowship

UT Press, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is accepting applications for its stellar publishing fellowship program. The fellowship provides intensive training in one department (editorial, design/production, journals, or rights and permissions) with exposure to and instruction in the operations of other departments. Applicants must have a degree from the University of Texas at Austin; preference is given to applicants with advanced degrees or those who can demonstrate advanced study or work experience beyond a baccalaureate. You should also really want to work in publishing because you’ll be asked to sign a statement of understanding and intent of the program’s purpose and procedures and the intent to complete the fellowship year and to pursue a career in publishing. Fellowship begins September 1, 2000, and ends August 31, 2001. Deadline for applications is April 30. Call 471-7233 for more information or to request an application or download the application from http://www.utexas.edu/utpress/html/fellow.html. The fellowship provides a stipend.

Events

The event the whole city has been waiting for, judging from the number of calls I’ve gotten asking when it’s going to happen — a joint reading from the Michener Center’s visiting writers Denis Johnson (Jesus’ Son, the forthcoming The Name of the World) and William Hauptman (Storm Season, Big River) — will take place on Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30pm, in the fourth floor auditorium of the HRC on the UT campus (21st & Guadalupe). Open and free to the public… UT prof Milton H. Jamail will discuss his new book Full Count: Inside Cuban Baseball (Southern Illinois University Press, 176 pp., $24.95) at Barnes & Noble Guadalupe on Tuesday, April 18, at 2pm.
