Print Magazine’s “September Vogue” (the Regional Design Annual, in other words) was delivered to the office last week, and I was able to wrest it away from the art department long enough to see how Austin fared in the competition.

No surpise that our city made a strong showing, with 16 awards and two standout winners: Pentagram Design and The Decoder Ring came away with multiple awards.

While local design firms seem inspired by current (if not waning) trends (birds, silhouettes), they punched ‘em up and presented unique perspectives. Check out The Decoder Ring’s Decemberist Poster that folds into a whooping crane (instructions included), and Pentagram’s Austin Film Festival Poster – a sexed-up, Texed-up version of old Hollywood. Also notable is the sweet, smart wedding photographer logo by Spoonbend, which suggests a camera lens and flash.

A recent trip to New York got me pumped about design (again), but it was fantastic to come home and be reminded that our city is bursting with creativity and talent. Congratulations, winners.
