Local writer and Pushcart Prize nominee Mary Helen Specht will run a two-part Short Story Master Class, held at the historic O. Henry Museum on East Fifth St. Specht was a judge for our 18th annual Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest, so we can state from firsthand experience that she is a sharp and savvy reader; we have every confidence you will emerge the wiser for this experience.
Slightly poorer, yes, too: The two-part class costs $139. But heres what bang youll get for your buck: The first class, which takes place Sept. 11, will include the how-to part, then would-be writers will toil on their own on a first draft of the short story. They then return with first draft completed for a second class, Sept. 25, where feedback will be provided. Students will then submit a final draft, which will be reviewed by American Rust author Philipp Meyer. Meyer will choose his favorite story to be recognized at the Texas Book Festival in October.
