If not the bible of cutting-edge stand-up comedy and underground rock coverage, then the Athens, Ga.-based Chunklet magazine is certainly the equally funny equivalent of the Left Behind series. But Chunklet doesn’t lampoon; it harpoons, pulls a Private Lynndie, and is second only to a VA ward’s worth of catheters for taking the piss out. Publisher Henry H. Owings (also the Comedians of Comedy tour manager, promoter, and booking agent) explains, “If most music magazines are like a character-themed (e.g., SpongeBob SquarePants) Band-Aid, then Chunklet‘s like putting out a yeast infection with an ice pick. We’re a bullshit barometer for all other rock journalism. We don’t do reviews, we don’t do ad trades, we don’t do anything based on commerce, and we’re just trying to make music fun and/or laughable again.”

Chunklet magazine’s free SXSW day party begins at noon, Friday, March 18, at the Church of the Friendly Ghost, 209 Pedernales. Visit www.chunklet.com for band line-up and information. Chunklet is available at Waterloo Records.
