• Call Kathryn Beale (pictured) a can-do kind of gal. After three years of entering the Red Bull Art of Can national competition, in which entrants create works of art inspired by the titular energy drink, the Central Texan has claimed the grand prize. Her work Common Ground, a politically themed piece in which an elephant and donkey share a can of Red Bull, beat out some 300 entries from around the world. In addition to having the work exhibited at Union Station in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 8 to 19, Beale is getting an all-expenses-paid trip to Art Basel in Switzerland. “Winning anything is wonderful and the icing on the cake,” Beale says. “But if there were no prizes involved, I would still enter Art of Can.”
• Congratulations to local photographers Anna Krachey, Jessica Mallios, and Adam Schreiber on receiving their own exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. With “Perspectives 168: Anna Krachey, Jessica Mallios, and Adam Schreiber,” this trio of young artists, who are friends as well as colleagues, has hit a sort of trifecta: their first museum exhibition, the first in-depth survey of their work, and, in the exhibit catalog, their first scholarly publication. The exhibition opens Friday, Nov. 6, and runs through Feb. 7 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, 5216 Montrose Blvd. in Houston. For more information, call 713/284-8250 or visit www.camh.org.
