Austin Studio Tour returns thanks to Almost Real Things, an Austin-based arts magazine. After founders Big Medium closed their doors in February, the future of the now-beloved tradition was uncertain. “The Studio Tour is an essential part of Austin’s culture, and we are dedicated to fostering a sustainable platform for the thousands of creators who are the heart and soul of our city,” magazine CEO Zachary Zulch stated in Big Medium’s announcement.
Oxford American is devoting its 27th annual Southern Music Issue to Austin, as declared with a performance from singer-songwriter Carolyn Wonderland. Wonderland and other Austin staples will be featured on the vinyl record that accompanies the magazine, out in December, which editors say will focus on Austin’s diverse live music scene and organizations like HAAM and HOME that keep the Live Music Capital performing.
Austin Arts Hall of Fame will induct 10 new members in separate receptions throughout the year. These new inductees mark the first in five years for the organization, which recognizes Austinites across culture and arts fields. Legendary Chronicle Arts Editor Robert Faires, who retired from the paper in 2021, is among them, celebrated for his gallantly spirited reporting and reviewing and his tireless theatrical contributions. Other inductees include Dave Steakley – who cultivated a “spirit of cooperation, of community and dialogue,” in Faires’ own words – at the Zach Theatre, which took home a bounty of trophies at June’s Austin Theatre Critics Awards.
