The new Uptown Cultural District — that area of hot galleries and
restaurants bounded by 15th Street, Lavaca, Martin Luther King Boulevard, and San Antonio
Street — hosts its first event this week in conjunction with the opening of Austin
Visual Arts Association’s 20th anniversary membership show in the Artists Coalition
of Austin Gallery @ Art Plex, 1705 Guadalupe. Five galleries — ACA Gallery, Women
& Their Work, Lyons Matrix, Galleria Sin Fronteras, and Robert Peeples, Jr. Gallery
— and four eateries — Bertram’s, Dog & Duck Pub, Mars, and El Mercado — will
join in the opening, with maps of the area and ideas for how to enjoy it. The
show, with work by 65 artists, is on display through July 18. Call 457-0075 for info.

Getting Seen

Root Wy’mn Theatre Company continues to bring new audiences all over the
land under its spell. This week, playwright/poet/artistic director Sharon
Bridgforth and performer Sonja Parks are on the north end of I-35, presenting
dyke/warrior-prayers at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. On the home front, the company is
offering several new residency programs, through which you can have Bridgforth conduct
a poetry reading and dialogue; workshops on writing or issues of intimacy and
identity; or a staged reading of her work lovve: rituals & rage. Bridgforth is
also seeking women actors/dancers/singers and drummers to develop new performance

Worthy Causes

Stillpoint Dance Company is hosting “Martini Madness,” an
all-shook-up fundraiser where you can try six different martinis prepared by some of the
city’s best bartenders, savor taste treats, bid in a silent auction, and enjoy a
performance of The History of Dance, Part I, by Mary Lang of Esther’s Follies. The
madness starts Sunday, June 29, 4pm, at Lazy Oak Bed & Breakfast, 210 W. Live Oak.

Theatre Collective is holding a set construction marathon Saturday, June
28, 9am- 9pm, in the Utopia Theatre, School for Social Work Building, 1925 San
Jacinto, on the UT campus. The company, which is set to open its version of Michael
Frayn’s farce cubed Noises Off on July 11, is using the event to raise funds for the show.
