While that headline may not generate goosebumps among the general populace the way that old pronouncement with Garbo did, among Austin’s visual arts aficionados I wouldn’t be surprised to see it give their flesh a rise. It heralds the arrival of the architect newly selected to design a permanent facility for the Austin Museum of Art. Richard Gluckman is the man chosen to realize the downtown dream that has haunted the museum for 15 years, and folks who have been waiting so long to see the project built are eager to hear what the architect has to say about his philosophy, the site, the space, the city … anything. Now comes their first chance: Gluckman is the speaker for AMOA – Downtown’s “On the Avenue” program series for October. The event takes place in the downtown galleries, 823 Congress, on Thursday, October 8. A wine-and-cheese mingle begins at 6pm, then Gluckman speaks at 7pm. Admission is $7 ($5 for museum members). Frontier Crossers Wanted
It isn’t every day that one of Austin’s premier theatre companies has employment openings available for some lucky stagehounds to snag … it just feels that way to some artistic directors. In what strikes me as a big head-scratcher, Frontera@Hyde Park Theatre has had two administrative positions that it has been trying to fill for months. Months. But this is Frontera, the company that pretty much set the bar for high-quality alternative theatre in this town over the past six years; the company that has given birth to so many great new plays; the company behind Weldon Rising, Enfants Perdus, Blood:Shock:Boogie, blood pudding; the company that gave us FronteraFest. You’d think it would be flooded with applications from theatre artists hoping to secure a spot on the F@HPT staff. (Well, maybe you wouldn’t, but I would.) But artistic director Vicky Boone reports that response to the job postings has been but a trickle, and the positions are still unfilled (which seems like ages to Boone, who has been shouldering a lot of the extra load). Want to apply? The jobs are Managing Director (directing all business and development operations for F@HPT, starting at $18,000-$23,000) and Marketing Director (directing the conception, creation, distribution, and tracking of all F@HPT marketing materials, at $200/week). On the Dial
Austin’s home for classical music, KMFA 89.5 FM, has added a new show worth kicking up your heels over. It’s Invitation to the Dance, an inside look at dance hosted by a couple of Austinites who know that world well: Ballet Austin Artistic Director Lambros Lambrou and Resident Choreographer Stephen Mills. Each week, one of the two hosts will discuss a specific aspect of dance, with an emphasis on the classical composers who contributed so much to ballet. On October 1, the program airs “The Art of the Pas de Deux”; on October 8, it tells of “Scandal at the Ballet.” Catch it at 10pm Thursdays. And if you tune in an hour earlier, you’ll be able to catch In Performance at UT, the weekly broadcast of recitals and concerts from the UT School of Music. On October 1, you can hear distinguished faculty members Ronald Crutcher, Lita Guerra, and Roger Myers; then, on October 8, it’s the UT Jazz Orchestra. In Performance at UT airs at 9pm Thursdays. For more info, call 476-5632.
