Progressive Arts Collective’s Second Sym-posium for African-American Theatre
Artists and their Allies is set for Saturday, February 24, at Austin Community
College, Rio Grande campus. This follow-up to Pro Arts’ November symposium is
expected to draw an even larger turn-out, based in part on advance conversation
prompted by questions from Dr. Joni Jones: “Do we have a sense of definition as
African-American theatre artists? Is this a specific group aesthetic? What is
that aesthetic?” Dr. Jones will also give a historical overview of
African-American theatre companies that have been clear in what they wanted to
achieve. Other events include a dance demo/workshop with Jimmy Turner, a
singing workshop with Dr. Beulah Agnes Jones, a panel discussion on audience
development in the African-American community, a Shakespearean acting
lecture/demo, presentation of community service awards and tributes, and
performances by Ladies of the Mop, Root Wy’mn Theatre Co., and Correo
Aereo. For info, call 447-5343.
