The O. Henry Museum and the Austin Bat Cave are known for the fine work they do molding young writers, but this month they’re offering classes cater to an older crowd.

Now in its third year, the O. Henry Museum Short Story Master Class is a two-session workshop that aims to take a story from inception to final draft under the guidance of an established Austin writer. This year, S. Kirk Walsh is running the show. Final stories will then be evaluated by guest judge Stephen Harrigan (Remember Ben Clayton), whose top pick will be published on the O. Henry Museum and Texas Book Festival websites. The class costs $139 and takes place Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 from 9am to noon; contact Michael Hoinski at michael.hoinski@ci.austin.tx.us or 512/472-1903 to register.

It’s a busy month for Walsh: She’s also conducting a writing workshop over at the Austin Bat Cave, with a focus on long-form fiction or creative non-fiction. That class runs Sept. 12-Nov. 1. If Young Adult fiction is more your bag, ABC is offering another class on that very topic, led by YA author Margo Rabb (Cures for Heartbreak), which runs Sept. 13-Oct. 18.
