Ice Cream Man Presents!
Saturday's Flavor: Port O'Brien
By Matt Allen, Fri., March 14, 2008
Friday was perfect ice-cream weather but apparently not perfect ice-cream-truck weather. On our way to the French Legation for the Other Music/DigForFire.tv party, Bessie, our classic ice cream truck, started sputtering in the low gears. Obviously, something was wrong. We dropped in a pint of transmission fluid, but that didn't help much. Instead of working on the truck in the middle of nowhere, we limped on and made it in the back gate of Austin's Oldest Home.
Kate and James started passing out free ice cream while I popped up the hood and started tinkering around to see what was up. We had only planned to stay an hour or so, because we wanted to make it out to Hank Sinatra's house to hang out with some goats and see Two Gallants play, but Bessie wasn't having it. Eventually, we conceded the fact that with a city view, great music, and traffic on I-35, it'd be best for us to stay put until Gooch arrived in Bessita to drop off tools and fluids.
After Atlas Sound finished on the main, electrified stage, Port O'Brien fired up on the acoustic stage. Right before I left Long Beach to drive out here, I got a package containing Port O'Brien's new album but didn't have a chance to rock it, since the sound system in Bessie only plays music from the loudspeaker on the roof. The songs I recognized during the set were off the older Port O'Brien album I have, and they sounded terrific. The new ones made me look forward to rocking their new album even more. You can catch them at a few day parties today. They'll be at the Flamingo Cantina at 2pm, Bourbon Rocks at 5pm, then at Saengerrunde Hall around 9pm.
