The Austin Chronicle is seeking a News editor.

Applicants should have 2+ years of editing experience; a flexible working knowledge of national, state, and especially city of Austin politics; management experience of people and copy, ability to multitask, and new media expertise; and a passion for covering the news across multiple platforms, from long-form print journalism to quick-hit breaking news posts and a lively social media presence. Familiarity and facility with an alt-weekly ethos/culture a must.

The News editor oversees the Chronicle's news coverage in print and online. Duties include original reportage; conceiving and directing a weekly and daily editorial storylist; managing News staff and freelancers; recruiting and shaping new writers; engaging with the community, organizations, and public figures; and addressing source issues and legal issues in news reporting.

Founded in 1981, the Austin Chronicle takes seriously its role in the community – as a trusted news source and a voice for the people. We are looking for someone spirited, self-driven, progressive, and understanding of the ways that politics and government works, the questions that need to be asked, and the areas to be closely covered.

accounting assistant

The Austin Chronicle is currently taking applications for an Accounting Assistant. Job responsibilities include:

• AR, AP, payroll, daily deposit reports, and other bookkeeping functions
• Entering contracts, scheduling ads, invoicing, and entering payments in billing software program
• Reconciling account discrepancies
• Assisting Credit Manager with collections
• Creating and maintaining spreadsheets in Excel and Open Office
• Communicating with clients and vendors
• Processing new hire paperwork
• Administering employee insurance benefits
• Managing front desk staff of two

Requirements:
• Prior accounting or bookkeeping experience
• Proficiency with Excel and Word
• Excellent organizational skills and superior attention to detail

Position is full-time, hours are 9-5:30pm Monday through Friday

digital media intern

The Austin Chronicle is seeking an interns to join the Marketing Department for an unforgettable summer of 2014.

You will work with the Marketing Department to develop and implement unique marketing campaigns, events, and the overall promotion of the Chronicle. This internship is designed to give you experience working within the marketing field of a print and digital media organization. You’ll gain experience with on-site event activations, social media campaigns, and marketing strategies. Emphasis will be placed on creating original digital content and photography, so this will be a great opportunity for someone looking to build their portfolio by creating interesting content for The Austin Chronicle. This position will also support one of the Chronicle’s largest events this year, the 24th annual Hot Sauce Festival on August 24. School credit is available.

Examples of intern duties:
Schedule and organize social media posts
Research social media and online contest related material
Photograph Austin Chronicle promotional and in-house events
Attend and help setup at Chronicle events when needed
Create content for events blog, photo albums, and social media messaging
Provide new ideas for digital sponsorship integrations
Oversee digital sponsorship fulfillments

Requirements:
Must love engaging in the Austin community
Must be active on social media and understand the functionality of social media channels Must have reliable transportation
Must provide own laptop and smartphone
Must have interest in photography and have own camera
Available to attend events on weekends and evenings from time-to-time (you will have advance notice.
Must be able to commit to internship through August
Interest in videography a plus!

chrontourage street team

The Austin Chronicle is looking to add a few volunteer members to our street team. If you love going out to events and shows and are enthusiastic about promoting cool things going on around town, you might be a perfect addition to our Chrontourage team.

The 'chron-tourage' (aka Chron2) is a vital part of of the overall marketing and social media operations of the Austin Chronicle. The perfect candidate is sharp and outgoing and will serve as an informed representative of the Austin Chronicle.

You will work with the promotions manager and other Chrontourage members to coordinate our presence at events, develop and implement fun marketing campaigns and give out free stuff to our fans. You'll be expected to attend concerts, movie screenings, and other exciting events happening around town as a representative of the Austin Chronicle.
