    Emo Muzingo

I’m not very good at general trivia – save for the music round, when my otherwise useless ability to recognize songs after a few seconds really comes through. If you, too, love a game of Name That Tune, head to South Lamar beer garden Bouldin Acres for Muzingo, or musical bingo. This week, it’s emo night, so brush up on your Paramore and Panic! beforehand … Maybe even study some Rites of Spring and Sunny Day, if you really want to cover all your bases. Prizes are included, of course. – Carys Anderson

Paper Lei Making w/ Austin History Center

Thirty-two years ago, local(ish) boy George H.W. established May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander month. Pay your respects at Windsor Public Library, bringing another fantastic bit of programming in partnership with Austin History Center. A local curator will walk through artifacts from each culture. Then they’ll dive into traditions from America’s only archipelago – Hawaii! Learn about the cultural significance of the hula and leis, then respectfully try out lei-making for yourself. It’s a perfect way to honor the stories of this vital community. – Cat McCarrey

Veiled Aristocrats and Ten Minutes to Live (1932)

A double feature by Oscar Micheaux – widely considered the first major Black American filmmaker, and the first to produce a “talkie” – lands at AFS this week, and it’s a special one. 1932’s Veiled Aristocrats follows a light-skinned Black man who has become a successful lawyer by passing for white (played by Lorenzo Tucker, who was known as the “Black Rudolph Valentino”) returning to his hometown for a family reunion. The film is a second adaptation of Charles W. Chesnutt’s novel The House Behind The Cedars, after its first silent iteration was lost when Micheaux was forced to make cuts by the scandalized Virginia Censorship Board. Another Micheaux film, Ten Minutes to Live, screens alongside Veiled Aristocrats. Made the same year, it follows a nightclub singer who is offered a role in a producer’s film in exchange for sex. Meanwhile, a patron at her club receives a threatening note telling her she will be killed in 10 minutes. – Lina Fisher

      Write Club

As Amy Poehler’s character Susie advises about musical theatre in Wet Hot American Summer, “Your craft is a muscle; you have to exercise it.” If your craft is writing, consider Write Club your gym sesh. At this monthly meetup, participants are given a prompt or exercise, then everyone will write and share. Don’t be shy; this is a supportive environment filled with folks who are also writers, aka some of the most insecure people on the planet. Have a stretch, crick your neck, and get those writing muscles absolutely ripped. – Kat McNevins
