    Birdathon Kickoff: Flap-py Hour

Every year, Travis Audubon runs their Birdathon as a way to “engage in our mission to protect native birds.” Birders compete in teams to see how many birds they can observe during one trip, with guidelines in place to keep things fair. This event fundraises for our local avid avian allies through registration fees and donations. To start this showdown right, Travis Audubon’s throwing a party where birders can eat, drink, and chirp to their heart’s content ahead of competition. While Flap-py Hour ends after one night, Birdathon runs until May 16 – so may the highest flyer win! – James Scott

    Heavy Meddo, Prehuman, Luxury Television

In the land of Heavy Meddo, vocals are but an ornamental add-on to the quartet’s fuzzy instrumental focal point. On latest EP Atonal Choir File, “Yacht Ribbon Snob” chops Bill Baird’s lyrics into incomprehensible syllables. The bandleader opts for a more traditional hum on the title track, but sludge guitar still supersedes. On April Fools’ Day, the noise rockers play for free at South Austin arcade Blazer Tag alongside shoegazers Prehuman and the inscrutable Luxury Television – who forgo recorded material for an unpredictable, genre-shifting live set. – Carys Anderson
