Trailer Park Goes Local

'Shepard and Dark,' plus a new Drafthouse Films acquisition

We've spent plenty of space in Trailer Park showing you early looks at big blockbuster pieces coming soon to cineplexes near you. But what about the projects that hit a little closer to home – literally?

Shepard and Dark

Pulitzer-winning playwright Sam Shepard traded letters for decades with his friend Johnny Dark – almost 300 of them, in fact. Director Treva Wurmfeld takes a look at the men, their friendship, and their enduring archive in this documentary, which the Austin Film Society will screen Sunday, June 2.

The screening is timed to coincide with a new Wittliff Collection exhibit in San Marcos, "The Writer's Road: Selections from the Sam Shepard papers," and the film is expected to return to theatres this fall.

A Field in England

Drafthouse Films, the local distribution house behind Klown and Graceland, has picked up a new one: A Field in England, the new historical horror from British filmmaker Ben Wheatley.

Winter in the Blood

This project from Andrew Smith and University of Texas RTF lecturer Alex Smith gets its premiere in next month's Los Angeles Film Festival, where it's a part of the Narrative Competition.

'The Book of Joe'

We don't quite know what to make of this trailer for a short from Austin filmmakers Mario James Pena and Dana Archip, so we'll let you process its explosions, Jesuses, and … aliens? … for yourself. The short premieres tomorrow as part of the "WTF?" shorts program at the Seattle International Film Festival.
