Texas directors Joe Nicolosi and David Lowery top Filmmaker Magazine’s just-announced roundup of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film.
The Austin-based Joe Nicolosi made the bumpers for the 2011 SXSW Film Festival, including “The Mushroom Kingdom,” which reinterprets videogame star Mario in a drug-fueled drama (embed below). Haven’t seen them since March? They’re worth watching again; you can check them out on Nicolosi’s Vimeo page here.
Writer/director David Lowery (St. Nick) is based in Dallas, but has collaborated with Austinites as a cinematographer and editor. Incidentally, Lowery’s latest short, “Pioneer,” is screening tonight as part of the Texas Filmmakers Showcase, presented by the Houston Film Commission. The 90-minute program, which also includes shorts from locals the Zellner Brothers, Bradley Jackson, and Annie Silverstein, runs tonight (7/20) at the AFS Screening Room (1901 E. 51st) at 7 and 9pm.
