If we want to make sure this country remembers its commitment to Iraq and does not get into other military misadventures, a new kind of political activism must evolve.
The war in Iraq has diverted our attention from other important matters, including a truly destructive proposed federal budget, mirrored by Texas’ very own fiscal abyss.
Let us hope the war in Iraq is quick, the death toll is low, and that all dire predictions prove unfounded; let’s also hope that we haven’t destroyed our own country ideologically in order to save it.
More than the insanity or weaponry of Saddam Hussein, we should fear the deepening of a rift between the Muslim world and the West. The haste with which we are building toward war in Iraq is sending the wrong message to both.
