Dr. No
1962, NR, 111 min.
D: Terence Young; with Sean Connery, Ursula Andress.

The sweet scent of over-the-top Bond antics isn’t evident in this tentative opening to the series. Connery takes a fairly normal bloke with a cool gun and a rotten disposition on a quest to stop the fiendish Dr. No from stealing rockets, while rescuing a blond bombshell named Honey Rider in the process. No theme song beyond the signature guitar riff; no pre-credits, stunt-happy scenes of carnage; no Desmond Llewelyn – but the seeds are sown.
