Protesters gathered on the south steps of the Capitol at noon. -
APD officers parked across the street from the Capitol. -
Barbara Taft, well known for her support of Lacresha Murray, speaks. She reminded the assembled that it took five years of concerted effort to free Murray. -
Robert Muhammad speaks, surrounded by fellow members of the Nation of Islam. -
Leaving the Capitol, the protesters marched down Congress toward APD headquarters. -
Upon arriving at APD headquarters, attendees chanted “Justice for Larry Jackson.” -
Some brought photos, flowers, signs, and gifts to make a memorial to local residents killed by law enforcement officers. -
After more speeches were made at APD, protesters ventured out on the I-35 frontage road, blocking traffic. -
While some blocked traffic, others staged a die-in symbolizing black Americans killed by cops. -
According to observer Michael Siegel of the National Lawyers Guild, APD considered arresting those blocking traffic for the die-in, but held off after learning that it was only meant to last 4 1/2 minutes (representing the 4 1/2 hours Mike Brown’s body lay in the street in Ferguson, Mo.). -
Traffic at the intersection came to a stand-still. -
Afterwards, those who remained returned to the Capitol. Organizer Snehal Shingavi of the People’s Task Force said that he felt the event went “exceedingly well.”
