Four years into its reincarnation, Austin Psych Fest celebrates the city’s spacey roots in experimental sounds with three nights of genre-spanning music at Far Out Lounge. The spring festival, a complement to fall’s Levitation, scoots down the calendar this year, gathering psychedelic-inspired acts from across the globe and sonic spectrum May 8-10.
Oklahoma-born, prop-loving performers the Flaming Lips top the lineup Friday, opening the festival with help from grungy shoegazers DIIV, indie rock sweethearts Momma, and Brazilian psych quartet Boogarians.
Festival founders and psychedelic pioneers the Black Angels celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Passover, on Saturday night, while Ty Segall, a prolific multi-instrumentalist and producer who shaped a generation of indie rock music, sets the stage. Performances from French pop project Melody’s Echo Chamber, Italian fuzzed-out rockers New Candys, and Middle Eastern funk quintet Al-Qasar present a diverse platter of international psychedelia. Local acts Grocery Bag and Annabelle Chairlegs bring a taste of on-the-ground rock from the Live Music Capital to the South Austin stages.
Chicano soul group Thee Sacred Souls leads Sunday’s showcase of more global voices in psychedelia. Tropical instrumentalists La Lom, soul-influenced singer Trish Toledo, garage rockers NIGHT BEATS, and Italian dream-pop act Dumbo Gets Mad round out the evening. Money Chicha and Como Las Movies present cumbia-fusion homegrown in the Texas capital, and Adrian Quesada takes a turn on the DJ stand to get the crowd grooving.
