    Bring It On: The Musical

Pom-poms at the ready, everybody, because Zilker Theatre Productions is bringing the screen-to-stage adaptation of this cheerleading classic as their summer musical. Adapted with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda as well as an original story by Avenue Q’s Jeff Whitty, this high-flying story of betrayal, friendship, and ponytails hits the Hillside with local Austin artists Ella Harber and Yassie Kiara bringing to life the two leads. You’ll laugh; you’ll cry; you’ll be named captain of the cheer squad!

Deaf Austin Theatre’s A Strange Loop

Founded on the idea of ensuring deaf inclusion on the stage and in the crowd, Deaf Austin Theatre brings a “blisteringly funny” musical tale of Usher, a young artist who grapples with identity and sexuality. The promo materials sell it the best, calling it a “big, Black and queer-ass Great American Musical for all.”

    Grand Hotel: The Musical

Alchemy Theatre continues their quest to present shows away from the beaten path. They’re keeping musical history alive with restagings of past pieces that may be gone but will not be forgotten. Grand Hotel is the latest in that journey, an extravaganza packed wall-to-wall (and room-to-room) with showstopping numbers. (Seriously, if nothing else, please head over to YouTube to watch Michael Jeter – aka Sesame Street’s Mister Noodle – earn his well-deserved Tony.) Set in 1928 Berlin, Grand Hotel balances joyful music with bitter truths, letting the audience snoop into the lives of the hotel’s sometimes-nefarious guests, whose secrets reveal themselves over the course of their stay. So check in to check out what lurks in such luxurious lodgings. – Cat McCarrey

    The Wizard of Oz

No need for a tornado to hit town – you just gotta buy a ticket to be transported to Oz. Zach Theatre bills this as an “immersive” Zach360 production of the iconic, Depression-era musical about a girl named Dorothy and a yellow brick road that leads to adventure.

    Write Club

As Amy Poehler’s character Susie advises about musical theatre in Wet Hot American Summer, “Your craft is a muscle; you have to exercise it.” If your craft is writing, consider Write Club your gym sesh. At this monthly meetup, participants are given a prompt or exercise, then everyone will write and share. Don’t be shy; this is a supportive environment filled with folks who are also writers, aka some of the most insecure people on the planet. Have a stretch, crick your neck, and get those writing muscles absolutely ripped. – Kat McNevins
