Bird Walk on Lady Bird Lake

There’s a lot of things I think I know about birds that probably aren’t true. For example, they’re the animal most closely related to dinosaurs. Thankfully there’s the Travis County Audubon Society to help with all those things I don’t know about feathered flyers. At this event the experts will offer an early morning tour of Downtown birds. Find out what avian friends are sharing our urban spaces unbeknownst to us (or knownst if it’s a grackle), and bring some binoculars to get a little closer and more personal. – James Renovitch

    Dana Robinson: “The Middle Distance”

Ivester Contemporary, that purveyor of meticulously curated duo shows at its Canopy space on Springdale, offers a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Dana Robinson this spring, featuring 12 delicate acrylic, ink, and fabric paintings with ironically punchy names. The surfaces almost recall a scrapbooking sensibility with neon pinks and collaged bits of hand-dyed cloth, but are blurred at the edges like memory. Contrasting Robinson’s strained sensitivity, Texas State alumna Sydney Guzman’s “Under the Moon’s Eye,” running concurrently, asserts a less abstract approach, offering painterly scenes of surreal nature, animals, and the artist herself while exploring similar themes. – Lina Fisher

Dangerous Animals on the Water (2025)

Rolling Roadshows, the Alamo Drafthouse’s arm for unconventional exhibitions, already perfected multi-sensory terrors with its Jaws on the Water screenings (returning June 7, June 21, July 12, and July 26). That float-while-you-watch showmanship expands to this Texas premiere of Sean Byrne’s latest horror. The IFC Films + Shudder co-production tracks a surfer who’s been abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer. Star Hassie Harrison will be on site for the screening, and you’ll even get to take home your seat – an exclusive branded inner tube.

    Make & Take: Marker Monoprints

To make or take: That is the question. The answer? Do both! Artist and teacher CJ – of CJ Sketches – delivers a lesson on monoprinting where participants utilize recycled materials to make unique prints and take them home to display or gift to a friend. According to ACR’s class description, monoprinting helps mental health by its celebration of “happy accidents” and its mindful meditative process. “This workshop is about process over perfection,” they write, “nurturing self-expression and curiosity.” Costing zero dollars and zero cents with all supplies provided, can you afford to skip this creative cohort? – James Scott

Sydney Guzman: “Under the Moon’s Eye”

Austin-based and McAllen-born artist Sydney Guzman says her upcoming sculpture & painting exhibition began from a conversation – not with a person, but the universe. “In moments of uncertainty, I pose a silent question,” says Guzman. “And the world responds, not with words, but through intuitive signs: an animal crossing my path, an object pulling my attention, a subtle shift in energy.” These questions and their answering signs brighten the Ivester walls this Saturday, April 19, with Guzman’s bold colors and “gestural brushstrokes,” as the gallery describes, bringing to viewers’ minds questions of transition, form, and self. Don’t be surprised if after you leave the gallery, you, too, will see the world responding to your unspoken inquiries; just be open to the visions. – James Scott
