Featuring 11 performers, a Hot Dog Qween pageant, an immersive clown meat sculpture garden, a raffle with “prizes you won’t want,” and decorations in the “patriotic acid rain bbq decor” fashion.

  An Evening With B. Dylan Hollis

  Pandemic quarantine boredom and supply shortages led to many of us experimenting more in the kitchen, and in one case it worked out extremely well! B. Dylan Hollis is the guy you’ve probably spotted on Instagram Reels gamely but dubiously taking a stab at absurd Depression-era recipes like Hoover Stew with hot dogs and canned goods or Ration Cake, starring lard, boiled raisins, and molasses. For Hollis’ follow-up to 2023 bestselling cookbook Baking Yesteryear, the social media chef took a cross-country tour of vintage recipes, resulting in the 100 collected in Baking Across America. Retro recipes from the 1900s to the 2000s cover something from every state in the union, and rumor has it that Texas sheet cake reps the Lone Star State. Get your book signed and take in an enlightening conversation with Hollis, Alex Rigby, and Mackenzie Smith. – Kat McNevins

  “Dog Days”

  When the profound connection between dog and human has become fetishized and monetized for clicks, where’s a soulful dog person to go? Why not this group exhibition, which pays sweet tribute to our four-legged fam? Referencing the origins of “dog days” as a time of unrest in ancient times, DORF curators Sara Vanderbeek and Eric Manche are using the show to advance a different narrative: “that in a time of global uncertainty and rising temperatures, the steady, loving presence of a dog can be a grounding force – a source of comfort, stability, and meaning.” Friday’s pet-friendly opening reception will have on-site adoptions, live dog portrait painting by Ami Plasse, and a doggy dance party with DJ Dana Scully. – Kimberley Jones

  Arf, arf: This is my impression of your dog when you tell them about this furry fundraising effort from Divine Canines. Tell their placid doggy faces about how 30 CTX craft breweries are participating, like Celis Brewery and Independence Brewing. Pet their ears and inform your pooch how buying a $30 Pawsport as well as a 2025 pint glass entitles you to a pour at each brewery. At this point, the canine mind might think: Okay, but what do I get out of all this? “Don’t worry,” you say. “Every brewery has promised to be dog-friendly, so we can go together.” Your dog’s response, probably: Woof! – James Scott

  Margie Criner: “Sound & Vision”

  Hailing from Chicago, artist Margie Criner works in sculpture and miniatures. How so? Her unique sculptural works – themselves impressive patchworks of materials from wool to actual hornets’ nests – feature peepholes through which viewers may glance tiny tableaux. These miniature worlds all center music, such as her pinky-finger-sized record store, Needle on the Records, with vintage posters plastered across its small interior walls. “The music theme isn’t always literal,” explains Criner, “but background sounds within the space, specific to what I’m processing. Kind of like how there’s music playing at the grocery store, that music is everywhere.” – James Scott

  Queer Black Women Alliance Presents: First Wednesday

  Having fun and meeting new people is harder than TV makes it seem. Good thing there’s orgs like Queer Black Women Alliance, who’ve got another event series starting this month with First Wednesday. These’ll be open to the full breadth of Black LGBTQIA+ Austinites as a way to “connect after work or just after a long day,” says their Insta. Self-described writer, tarot reader, and “catalyst” Anraje hosts the event at Southern hospitality hot spot the Dogwood’s Domain locale. Bring your troubles, your joys, and your open heart, and create a little connective tissue with your local Black queer community. – James Scott

  Swamp Dogg is an artist so original, he coined his own genre – or so he claims. “Swamp music” is R&B, heavy on the funk, with an extra helping of soul and a hearty side of experimentation. The original D-O-double-G made a name for himself writing country and blues music before adopting his Swamp Dogg moniker and character in the 1970s. He’s since amassed a cult following behind his soulfully irreverent, socially conscious lyrics and his refusal to slow down or be categorized. Make it a whole Swamp Dogg spectacular and catch a showing of the new documentary Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted, opening Friday at AFS Cinema. (Read our film review.) – Caroline Drew
