Oedipus Rising Here’s a brilliant intermeshing of noble cause and genius event, sure to be
one of those classic Austin fundraisers folks talk about for years to come. The
inspired and inspiring broadway sensation, The Gospel at Colonus, which sets
the myth of Oedipus to the soul rave-up of a gospel church service, comes to
Austin for a limited run at Zachary Scott Theatre. This conceptual free-for-all
links the classic Greek tale of deception, fall from grace, and renewal with
the redemptive power of The Word set to song. A very special Premiere
Performance, Fri,
Oct 4, 8pm, will benefit the programs of Child &
Family Service and what better a cause considering the scope of the morality
play of family tragedy and rebirth? 478-5142, exts. 128 or 130. Sum of the Parts Speaking of singing The Word… Texas Gospel Announcers Guild and Bill
“The Mailman” Martin will be the featured performers at the East Austin Health
Festival & HIV/AIDS Workshop, Sat, Oct 5, 11am-4pm at St. James Baptist
Church, 1812 E.M. Franklin. Special children’s corner will feature face
painting, games, and a fish pond. Many health organizations like Planned
Parenthood, North East Dental Clinic, and People`s Community Clinic, among
others, each representing a square of the quilt that is Austin’s public health
providers community, will be on hand for testing and information dissemination.
A special Memorial Quilt Unveiling Ceremony of Love will take place at noon.
404-1548, 469-2000, or 404-1532.

Planned Parenthood also sponsors a two-session workshop for teens and
their parents along with the City of Austin Health Department, twice during the
month of October. The Talk broaches the topics of unintended pregnancy,
sexually transmitted disease, and HIV/AIDS reduction with junior high kids.
This comfy and info-packed arena will let kids and parents explore values,
ideas, and questions re: the “Big S” (are we revealing any of our
uptight own?). So if you haven’t gotten around to the Birds & Bees yet (and
Bats — did you know that they are also major pollinators in our
ecosystem?),why not address it all here in one swell foop? 476-4610. Shine on, *hic*
Harvest Moon Although most of it will be coming from that bright lunar ball of camembert,
there will be moonshine of a different flavor flowing at Moonshining at
the Basin, the big harvest moon fundraiser for Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve,
Fri, Sep 27, 7-10pm. Yes, beer and wine will be available for this Nineties
version of the blessing of the crops, in addition to hors d’oeuvres, moonglow music, moonshine stories, and our absolute fave: lessons to learn how
to bay at the mooooooooooooon! Admission is $20 per howler.

Oh! And don’t forget the swell Lunar Eclipse, tonight, Thu, Sep 26. The Basin
welcomes the Austin Astrological Society, which will have telescopes and large
binoculars handy. 327-7622. China Syndrome “Bringing Beijing Home: What We`ve Done & Where We`re Going” is the
mouthful of a title conference/event/interglobal simulcast featuring the White
House Interagency Council in Washington, D.C. Gatherings of women across the
country will hear the event through a satellite downlink. First Lady Hillary
Rodham Clinton, among others, will speak. Locally the event comes to us via the
Foundation for a Compassionate Society, Sat, Sep 28, 8pm at the Austin
Convention Center, and local speakers who attended the UN World Conference on
Women in Beijing, China will provide a forum for dialogue. 447-6222.
