Have you ever wondered where to go for an anonymous (using a false name) or a confidential (using your real name) HIV antibody test? Has your medical clinic stopped offering the HIV test due to funding cutbacks? Does your test site only offer confidential testing, not anonymous? Do they provide a trained HIV counselor who can offer risk assessment, prevention methods, safe sex information, condoms, and other important health information? Do you know where HIV testing is free?
The Austin-Travis County Health Department offers HIV testing at 17 sites around Austin, plus Sunday night testing in various bars and clubs. Testing may be done using a false name or your real name. A trained HIV counselor will assist you in making an informed decision about testing. After testing, the counselor will give you an appointment date to return in 1-2 weeks for your results. It is important to return for the results. To ensure confidentiality, results will be given only to you in person.
If the test result is negative, the counselor will review prevention techniques, safe sex practices, and other information you may request.
If the test result is positive, the counselor will refer you to appropriate medical care, wellness programs, counseling services, and other resources available for HIV-positive people. Infection precautions and safe sex information are also shared during your appointment. A packet of pamphlets, brochures, and handouts is given to each positive client.
