Goths need love too, which is why variety show king Captain Eric Burton’s regular oddities market sets up shop at Elysium just in time for Valentine’s Day. Hard to say what special objects you’ll find at Thursday’s bazaar, but if Burton’s Fun Time Sideshow Circus is any indication, a few Fiji mermaids, jars of eyeballs, and animal skeletons are a safe bet – and live performances, of course. Carla Bley tribute w/ Carl Michel, Alex Coke, Ken George, Carolyn Trowbridge, Tex Gortex, & Masumi Jones

Over the latter half of the 20th century, the late jazz composer Carla Bley created a mountain of irrepressible, irresistible tunes that casually obliterated lines of demarcation. Though she maintained deep ties to the avant-garde, especially through her New York-based Jazz Composers Guild, her songs leaned hard into melody and expressed an impish sense of humor. That makes her music perfect for saxophonist Alex Coke and guitarist Carl Michel, who’ve been known to gleefully hop boundaries themselves over their long careers in Austin jazz. They’ll be joined by vibraphonist Carolyn Trowbridge, drummer Masumi Jones, trombonist Ken George, and bassist Tex Goretex. – Michael Toland

Help Clifford Help Kids benefiting American Youthworks w/ the Temptations Review Featuring the Legacy of Dennis Edwards

In 1960, two Detroit vocal groups, Otis Williams & the Distants and the Primes, fused as the Elgins and signed the following year to Motown Records as the Temptations. Only the Rolling Stones rivaled the powerhouse quintet in bad behavior and R&B. Still led by Texarkana-born Williams, Messrs. Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Jawan Jackson, and Anthony Grant croon, shoop, and glide through Antone’s annual fundraising gala for local nonprofit American YouthWorks. Celebrating its golden anniversary next year, the org’s YouthBuild provides vocational training in healthcare, IT, and construction for high schoolers, while their Texas Conservation Corps works landscape management and natural disaster response. Make Dog Toys With APA!

Two-time “Best of Austin” winner Austin Creative Reuse is a craft store dedicated to giving new life to items that have either already served a purpose or were just left over from another project: a magical place filled with misfit sewing notions, scraps of this and that, doodads and whatsits galore. Volunteers make it run, and on this day in Volunteer Land, you can use some of these fine materials to hand-stitch dog toys for animals residing in local shelters. Local comics creator Adam Kobetich (of The Shadow Under the Leaf fame) will show you how to channel your inner Stan Lee and Jack Kirby – or maybe Alison Bechdel or Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba – at this free workshop, where the power of sequential art is put into your narrative hands. – Wayne Alan Brenner

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

In only his third feature, New Queer Cinema icon Gus Van Sant lassoed two rising Hollywood stars for his dreamy-eyed arthouse film about two Portland hustlers. River Phoenix – Gen X’s James Dean, achingly vulnerable – plays a narcoleptic who falls in love with his straight best friend (Keanu Reeves), a Prince Hal-esque rich kid tender with his friend’s feelings ... until he’s not. Delectably off-kilter and teeming with gosh-wow visuals (a house falls from the sky, clouds skitter by in time-lapse, porno mags talk back), the film’s most special effect is capturing Reeves and Phoenix in full, luscious bloom of youth. Hark: A solution awaits at the Zach Theatre production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Dave Malloy’s musical adaptation of a 70-page section of Tolstoy’s great tome. Described by the theatre as an “innovative electro-pop opera,” this two-hour-and-thirty-minute love triangle will be available as pay-what-you-will until Feb. 4. Rome Fortune (DJ set)

A decade removed from 2013 breakout mixtape Beautiful Pimp and Rome Fortune is still pushing the envelope. After gaining notoriety for his unique blend of booming Southern trap and atmospheric indie synths, the famously blue-bearded Atlanta-grown rapper has gone on to collaborate with everyone from Gucci Mane to Lil Uzi Vert to Toro y Moi, garnering a reputation as a sonic experimentalist unafraid to blur genre lines.
