Beyond the swinging girl group doo-wop and garage rock retro moxie of Shannon & the Clams is evidence of an entire universe of grief and love – perfectly encapsulated by an album created in mourning, The Moon Is in the Wrong Place. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Now that Elon Musk seems to have gotten bored with the idea of sticking chips in people’s heads and is too busy wrecking the global economy, it’s a lot easier to enjoy Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell. This 1995 anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s groundbreaking cyberpunk manga pits Major Motoko Kusanagi (voiced by Atsuko Tanaka) against the enigmatic Puppet Master. Stunning as the action sequences are, it’s Shirow’s meditations on the nature of being that made this story so memorable, as he asks what happens when we all become ghosts in the machine. – Richard WhittakerApril 3-4 & 6 -

Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus (2025)
You know the song. You know the scene. But do you know the artist behind that haunting pop serenade? Singer Q Lazzarus, aka Diane Luckey, gained cult status following her 1988 tune “Goodbye Horses” being used as serial killer Buffalo Bill’s mirror-dance anthem. After having her songs and performances featured in other Jonathan Demme pictures, she later returned to working as a driver. Skip to 2019, when Lazzarus picks up filmmaker Eva Aridjis Fuentes by chance: Fuentes recognizes the musician, they talk, and now AFS screens the documentary they’ve made, where Lazzarus details her whole life alongside archival performance footage. Though the talented musician passed in 2022 due to sepsis, her legacy lives on. – James ScottMarch 30 & April 3 -

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
Much of Jason Isbell’s recent musical output has been notably pared down. His divorce-era offering Foxes in the Snow, released in March, is a stripped-down acoustic album, and in that spirit, the former Drive-By Trucker just completed an acclaimed solo tour capturing a quieter tone. His three nights in Austin – the only three-date city on this tour – marks his return to playing with his band the 400 Unit, the time alone perhaps lending some new perspective to his sets. – Abby JohnstonThu., April 3, 8pm -

The Traitors Watch Party
Ever the contrarian, I prefer The Traitors UK’s cast of normies versus the U.S.’s bench of backstabbing reality TV all-stars pulled from Survivor, Big Brother, and the Real Housewives franchise, but whichever flavor you choose of this reality competition show (there are about 20 international versions in rotation), you’re bound to get addicted. The biggest barrier to entry – who the heck has a Peacock subscription? Vacancy Brewing does! Enjoy new episodes with other faithful on Thursdays at 8pm. The nearness of beer could occasion a drinking game – maybe every time somebody wears a truly ridonk hat? I love a good at-home viewing party as much as the next person; screens and sweatpants are a match made in heaven. But Disney’s pro-shot live-stage recording of the multiple Tony award-winning Hamilton doesn’t come close to the real thing. True spectacle needs space – especially when that spectacle rocked the musical world and ushered in a new era of what can make a Broadway show.
