For the fourth year in a row, Austin short story writer Tom Doyal has been
invited to participate in the Texas Bound program of the annual Arts &
Letters Live series at the Dallas Museum of Art. Doyal’s “Suppressing the Grief
Response” will be read by Dallas actor Katherine Owens at 6:30 and 8:30pm on
April 7 in the museum’s auditorium. Doyal’s story won second prize in The
Austin Chronicle‘s 1993 short story contest. For tickets, call 214/922-1219

* THU, FEB 27: Diego Vazquez, Jr. will read from his debut novel, Growing
Through the Ugly, at Barnes & Noble, 7-8pm. Growing Through the Ugly
is set in El Paso, the story of a child-turned-soldier who grew up along
the Texas-Mexico border… Poet Maxine Kumin will give a reading at 7:30pm in
the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center’s fourth floor auditorium on the UT
campus. Kumin’s most recent book is Connecting the Dots; her Up
Country received the 1973 Pulitzer Prize. The event is sponsored by UT’s
Texas Center for Writers.
* FRI, FEB 28: Toad Hall will celebrate National Pig Day with various
pig-related activities for the boys and girls ages 4-9, including a dramatic
performance of Mrs. Potter’s Pig. $6 admission; 6:30-8pm.
* SAT, MAR 1: Restaurateur extraordinaire Eddie Wilson will sign the second
edition of his Threadgill’s — The Cookbook at Borders at 3pm. He will
be accompanied by poster artist Jim Franklin, renowned for his music posters
for Wilson’s Armadillo World Headquarters, and the Threadgill’s Troubadours,
the musicians who provide the music at the legendary restaurant every
Wednesday.
* WED, MAR 5: Pulitzer Prize finalist Tim O’Brien (Going After Cacciato; The
Things They Carried) will give a reading at Jessen Auditorium in the Old
Music Building on the UT Campus at 7:30pm. The event is sponsored by the Texas
Center for Writers.
* ONGOING: Half Price Books’ “Just Read” program has been expanded to include a
“Just Draw” program, wherein every time a child draws a book character on a
Half Price bookmark, Half Price will donate a book to a national literacy
project and the bookmark will be displayed in Half Price stores through Mar.
