book, Hockey Sur Glace, at Book People at 7pm… Alice Borchardt appears
at Borders Books in support of her latest book, Beguiled, 7:30pm. Beguiled
is the sequel to Devoted; both historical novels are set in
10th-century France.
* FRI, JAN 31: Today is the deadline to enter the Austin Writers’ League’s
(AWL) Teddy Book Awards competition, honoring outstanding children’s writing.
Entries may be fiction, nonfiction, or picture books. Winners receive $1,000
and a trophy. Call 499-8914… Today is also the deadline for the AWL’s Young
Texas Writers Scholarship Program. Competition is open to Texas high school

* SAT, FEB 1: Toad Hall celebrates Black History Month, 1-2pm, with stories by
and about African Americans and refreshments from the African-American
Cookbook.
* ONGOING: Drawing and Crossing Boundaries: The Roots of Texas Music is
the name of a free symposium at Southwestern University in Georgetown Jan.
30-Feb. 1. The conference will examine four musical traditions — Tejano,
Anglo, Euro-Ethnic, and African-American — through lectures and performances.
Featured participants include University of New Orleans professor of folklore
(and former Austinite) Nick Spitzer, UT professor Manuel Pe�a (author of
The Texas Mexican Conjunto), Tulane University professor and author of
Country Music USA Bill Malone, SUNY professor Charles Keil (author of
Music Grooves), and UH professor/poet/critic Lorenzo Thomas. Performers include
Johnny Gimble, Rufus Thibodeaux, Jose Moreno, Carol Fran & Clarence

contest for unpublished writers, sponsored by the Freelance Writers Network, is
accepting submissions of fiction and non-fiction short stories and poetry
through Feb. 15. Entries are limited to 1,500 words or less, and there is a $9

“Just Read” program has been expanded to include a “Just Draw” program, wherein
every time a child draws a book character on a Half Price bookmark, Half Price
will donate a book to a national literacy project and the bookmark will be
displayed in Half Price stores through March 1.
