The 1997 Hugo Awards were announced at the 55th World Science Fiction Convention, LoneStarCon 2 in San Antonio on August 30. Austin author Neal Barrett, Jr., served as Master of Ceremonies for this event. The prestigious awards are named in honor of Hugo Gernsback, the first editor of Modern Electrics, Amazing Stories, and the creator of the Science Fiction League, the first professionally sponsored science fiction club. The Hugos have been awarded annually by the Worldcon since 1953. This year’s winners are:
Best Novel: Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson (HarperCollins Voyager; BantamSpectra)
Best Novella: “Blood of the Dragon” by George R. R. Martin (Asimov’s 7/96)
Best Novelette: “Bicycle Repairman” by Bruce Sterling (Asimov’s 10/96, Intersections)
Best Short Story: “The Soul Selects Her Own Society” by Connie Willis (Asimov’s 4/96; War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches)
Best Non-Fiction Book: Time & Chance by L. Sprague de Camp
Best Dramatic Presentation: Babylon 5 “Severed Dreams” (Warner Bros.), Directed by David J. Eagle, written by J. Michael Straczynski, produced by John Copeland
Best Professional Editor: Gardner Dozois
Best Professional Artist: Bob Eggleton
Best Semiprozine: Locus, Charles N. Brown, ed.
Best Fanzine: Mimosa, Dick & Nicki Lynch, eds.
Best Fan Writer: Dave Langford
Best Fan Artist: William Rotsler
John W. Campbell Award: Michael A. Burstein
