Cellist Honored
Congratulations to UT-Austin Professor of Cello Phyllis Young on being honored this month with the Paul Rolland Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, given by the National Executive Board of the American String Teachers Association and the National School Orchestra Association, is presented annually to a teacher who has made significant achievements and contributions to the profession. Among the accomplishments that earned Young this honor: authorship of two widely used pedagogy books, Playing the String Game: Strategies for Teaching Cello and Strings and The String Play: The Drama of Playing and Teaching Strings; service as national president of ASTA (for which she received its 1984 Distinguished Service Award); direction of the University of Texas String Project, a renowned teacher training program, for 35 years; and a far-reaching career as a string teacher, not only in Austin but through workshops and master classes in 27 countries on five continents. Young, who holds the Parker C. Fielder Regents Professorship in Music at UT and serves as head of the String Division, was previously honored by the Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center of Indiana University with the Chevalier Du Violoncello. She will be presented with the lifetime achievement award at this month’s ASTA conference at the University of South Carolina.
Learning With Bogart
The St. Edward’s University Theatre Department is bringing one of the country’s greatest living directors to town very soon. Anne Bogart, co-founder of the Saratoga International Theater Institute, also known as the SITI Company, and the director of such productions as BOB, bobrauschenbergamerica, Room, Cabin Pressure, and Alice’s Adventures, will come to Austin and lead a master class with SITI Company member Ed J. Arazia at the Mary Moody Northen Theatre. The class is primarily for the students, of course, who will go on to spend five weeks with SITI Company members developing a new play that they will present in the spring, but the folks at St. Ed’s are very graciously offering space to interested members of the community to take advantage of this special opportunity. The class will be held February 8 & 9. Friday, 2-6pm, & Saturday, 9am-1pm. The fee for participation is $250. To reserve a space, contact Annie Suite: annies@admin.stedwards.edu.
