The Austin Public Library has hired Cynthia Charles as the Carver branch’s managing librarian. Charles earned her master’s from UT-Austin in 1996, and led the D.R. Glass Library at Texas College in Tyler (while receiving a Faculty of the Year Award earlier this year). On Aug. 2, Carver (1161 Angelina) will host a public reception in her honor.

Highly recommended: Bay Area author Beth Lisick brings her Everybody Into the Pool to BookPeople on Thursday, July 28, 7pm. Among her excellent new collection are the essays “My Way or the Bi-Way” and “The Wack-Ass Caucasian Two Step Chicken,” titles that only scratch the lens of her vast-cast scope.
