    Alexa Torres Quartet (album release)

Save the date for the Alexa Torres quartet debut album release on Saturday June, 15th at the Dougherty Arts Center. Doors open at 7:00, music starts at 7:30. In Situ is a jazz violin album that features both original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards, foregrounding improvisation throughout. This free concert is presented by Alexa Torres and the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and is supported by the Austin Live Music Event Fund. To create the album, Torres drew inspiration from her Cuban heritage and her time participating in a geographical diversity of jazz scenes within the US, Europe, and Latin America. If you like modern jazz, Latinx jazz, improvisation, the violin, or just good live music, you won't want to miss this concert! Reserve tickets via EventBrite.

    Blues on the Green

A brief cancellation scare at the beginning of the year dealt a major blow to the heart of Austin. However, with the help of some incredible sponsors, including H-E-B, and Austin City Council’s approval of a February resolution – which, essentially, protects the funding and longevity of free events that “reflect the City’s cultural identity as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ for all Austinites and its visitors” – Blues on the Green is back on! A collective sigh, and certainly some tears of relief, rippled across the city. A bastion of Austin’s traditions, Blues on the Green has seen its own kind of evolution with the guidance and thoughtful curation of living legend Jackie Venson. With headliners Golden Dawn Arkestra and hip-hop revolutionists Riders Against the Storm, this year’s show carries special significance. – Cy White

    Free Day

Art! Oh, I love it. But sadly, when I open my pockets, moths fly out. Good news for me and all my broke friends: Every Tuesday, the Blanton opens its doors to all visitors free of charge. Why, unburdened by the weight of an empty wallet, Austinites can mull the strange world of contemporary womanhood in “Unbreakable: Feminist Visions from the Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia Collection.” Or walk beneath the silver and mesh sculptures of Marie Watt’s “Sky Dances Light.” Or explore the past through its artistic pieces in “The Floating World: Masterpieces of Edo Japan.” Or enjoy any of the many, MANY other exhibitions available on this day: all for free. – James Scott

    Special Screenings

Movies in the Park: Jaws (1975)

Maybe you’ve been to a screening of Jaws on the lake, where divers swim under the water ready to give floaters a “bite”? This screening put on by the Austin Parks Foundation and the Museum of Ice Cream is bound to be just as cool but a little less scary, held at Austin’s oldest public pool instead of a murky lake. Cornucopia will bring 100 bags of free popcorn, and the film will begin at dusk. – Kat McNevins
