    Buzzkill at the Buzz Mill

Hump day just became, uh, no-slump day? Ah, sorry. I have to workshop my tight five. In the meantime, how about you enjoy some actual good comedy by attending this free show hosted by the hilarious Carlton Wilcoxson and Angelina Martin. They pull in Austin’s most engaging local talents, both emerging and headlining, to make the logs on Buzz Mill’s wall shake from thunderous laughter. “For the past 10+ years,” their event copy states, “this consistently entertaining show has earned its spot as one of the most fun things to do in Austin and with good reason: it never misses.” – James Scott

Queer Black Women Alliance Presents: First Wednesday

Having fun and meeting new people is harder than TV makes it seem. Good thing there’s orgs like Queer Black Women Alliance, who’ve got another event series starting this month with First Wednesday. These’ll be open to the full breadth of Black LGBTQIA+ Austinites as a way to “connect after work or just after a long day,” says their Insta. Self-described writer, tarot reader, and “catalyst” Anraje hosts the event at Southern hospitality hot spot the Dogwood’s Domain locale. Bring your troubles, your joys, and your open heart, and create a little connective tissue with your local Black queer community. – James Scott

    Queer Craft Night

In August 2022, hosts Ashley and Bernadette decided to bring together their two loves: crafting and hanging out with friends. Thus, Queer Craft Night was born! One venue change later and this DIY delight takes over queer-owned vino/espresso spot the Violet Crown every other Wednesday. Bring a project or start one on-site – according to QCN’s Insta, there’s been folks who’ve brought everything from embroidery to leather work, macrame to Lego-building. While the hosts always have a little extra supplies, you’re responsible for your own materials. Pro-tip: Violet Crown neighbors Little Deli, so arrive early and chow on a little brain food before startin’ in with the scissors. – James Scott
    Every other Tuesday, 6-9pm

Second anniversary w/ Knife in the Water, Pedal Steel Noah, Li'l Cap'n Travis

A spacious patio. A vegan-friendly menu. Those frozen prickly pear margs. Two years ago, North Loop’s best hangout spot – and there are many contenders, we know – opened its doors. Celebrate with this all-day happy hour, which offers a bouncy house, face painting, live screenprinting, flash tattoos via on-site shop Communion, food from Zucchini Kill and the Cookie Jar Bar, music by Knife in the Water, Pedal Steel Noah, and Li’l Cap’n Travis, a screening of 16 Candles, and, of course, birthday cake. That’s on top of all the awesome things Dub Trub has to offer on a normal day. – Carys Anderson

Words and Wonder: Rediscovering Children’s Literature

One of the pleasures of having a first-rate research center and archive in town is how the Harry Ransom Center will regularly comb through its own vast holdings and hand-pick gems to present in a new context. Hence the HRC’s latest exhibit, “Words and Wonder: Rediscovering Children’s Literature,” which pulls from its manuscript, art, photography, film, and performing arts holdings to spotlight early 20th-century authors and illustrators catering to a young readership. The exhibit includes magic lantern slides from Aesop’s Fables, John Tenniel’s illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Ernest H. Shepard’s indelible images from the Hundred Acre Wood, among other treats. Runs through August 17. – Kimberley Jones
