    Amy’s Fest

Like so many Texas Exes before me, I’ve spent my fair share of time at the Amy’s Ice Creams on Guadalupe; I even have a two-foot figurine of their mascot, a black and white dairy cow, in my living room. But it’s been a long time since Amy’s days as a quaint UT ice cream shop – 40 years, in fact, which is what Amy’s Fest celebrates. Now a staple across Central Texas, the beloved creamery plants treats, vendors, games, a DJ, a dog costume contest, and more at Bouldin Acres, all while paying it forward: Proceeds benefit Emancipet, which provides low-cost vet care. – Carys Anderson

    Bay of Angels (1963)

Close your eyes to conjure a Jacques Demy film and you probably see color, like the Technicolor wows of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort. But the French film legend started out in black & white – first Lola in 1961, then 1963’s Bay of Angels, starring Jeanne Moreau as a peroxide-blond gambling addict working the casinos in Nice. The screening kicks off a new AFS Essential Cinema summer series dubbed Club Med; other Mediterranean-set features include Taylor & Burton curiosity Boom!, Lina Wertmüller’s original Swept Away, and Godard’s Contempt. The Night of the Hunter (1955)

At some point close to the end of this picture, Robert Mitchum utters a scream so piercingly animalistic it’ll turn your blood cold. That’s the chilling power of Charles Laughton’s only directorial effort: a no-frills tale of love, hate, and the true soul-deep evil man is capable of when money is his only god. Paramount screens the classic in black & white for its 70th anniversary, though I can assure any doubters that time has not made this tale any less relevant. – James Scott
