    Ghost World (2003)

It seems as though the Nineties are back, with nostalgia for the fashion, music, and culture of the post-Reagan era on the rise as we yearn for a time that held so much promise. Graphic novel Ghost World captured that era through the lens of two aloof and cynical teen besties, Enid and Rebecca, played in the 2001 film by Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. Teenage angst is palpable with this pair, whose mean-spirited goof on a sad-sack older man named Seymour (Steve Buscemi) results in some painful but necessary growth as they make baby steps toward adulthood. – Kat McNevins Read a full review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

    Hop Make and Watch (2011)

What’s one to do with a toddler in spring? Why, take ’em to the library, of course! This Monday brings a seasonally appropriate afternoon activity as kiddos five years and older can make butterfly sticker crafts as well as fun froggy bookmarks. And there’s no need to worry about their attention drifting away and into mischief because onscreen will be Hop, an animated holiday movie featuring a young rabbit’s insecurity about filling his father’s shoes. Very relatable to kids. Just, uh, don’t tell them who voices the main rabbit as that guy’s been doing some real harebrained biz. Sheesh. – James Scott Read a full review of Hop.

Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie (1999)

Revolutionary Girl Utena is the best anime of all time. I’ll accept arguments otherwise – you know my email – but I believe this story’s mix of surreal imagery, emotional catharsis, and girls with swords ascends beyond most other magical girl material due to how hard it freakin’ goes. Look no further than its OVA (original video animation), which acts not so much as a truncated retelling of the anime but as its sequel – the answer after the anime ends on a question mark. Utena returns to that overwhelming Ohtori Academy once again the tomboy searching for her prince. She and Rose Bride Anthy clash and reunite, making for the most romantic naked drive through the desert anyone’s ever captured in animation to date. And yes, girl: This IS the one where she turns into a car. – James Scott
