TENT Trans Advocacy Day
It’s hard not to feel powerless when combating the seemingly daily attacks on marginalized people from state and national entities (read: assholes). The Transgender Education Network of Texas helps local folks do some direct advocacy at this daylong event with the goal of schooling state politicians on the issues facing the trans community (and maybe prove to the more ignorant among them that trans people aren’t cruel witches). Training starts at 10am, there’s a rally at noon, and the office visits start at 1pm. Participants should register online beforehand. Dune (1984)
The wrong director and the wrong project will often produce nothing more than a disaster. If you’re lucky, as in the case of David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation Dune, it’s at least an interesting disaster. Defenders of the film are few and far between and did not include Lynch, who could barely be drawn to talk about it. Maybe it was because his disappointingly literalist script never fully grasped the politically subversive text of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic. It was never bold enough to take on its twist on the white savior narrative as Denis Villeneuve did in his more recent film version. However, it’s still one of the most visually stunning and deliciously depraved space dramas ever conceived, as famous for Sting in a winged pleather Speedo as it is for its awe-inspiring depictions of sand worms. – Richard WhittakerApril 4 & 7-9 -

If you’ve ever felt homesick, congratulations – you have something in common with Sight and Sound’s greatest film of all time director Chantal Akerman (Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles). Bonus points if you’ve ever felt lost and lonely in New York City, as Ackerman’s News From Home plumbs similar woes to Joan Didion’s Goodbye to All That, following a 21-year-old Akerman existing ambiently in 1970s New York as she contemplates the letters her mother writes from Belgium over her first year away. Both a time capsule of the city and a bittersweet meditation on family and leaving home, this nuanced, touching avant-documentary screens at Hyperreal with doors at 7pm, movie at 7:30. – Lina FisherMon., April 7 -

Rope (1948)
Somehow, these Drafthouse screenings do NOT fall under Queer Film Theory 101, but by god they should. Alfred Hitchcock portrayed in faux-single-shot cinematography the murderous dinner party of “friends” Brandon Shaw and Phillip Morgan. These aesthetes were based on real-life killers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, whose crime Hitchcock correctly edits to be an age-appropriate strangling rather than college-kids Leopold & Loeb’s murder of a 14-year-old. Here, these so-called sophisticates squirm and sweat their way through a dinner party while mere feet away their dead peer rots in an antique chest. They clutch, scream, and gaze at each other with varying levels of loathing and lust – well, that might be me editorializing. Later dismissed by fellow cast member Jimmy Stewart as “worth trying” but not totally successful, he did remark that it was a singular work: “Nobody but Hitch would have tried it.” – James ScottApril 7 & 9 -

The greatest creature feature of the 1990s returns for these belated 35th anniversary screenings – reigniting the ultimate movie bromance. As dimwitted handymen Val and Earl, Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward goof around then get serious when monstrous subterranean Graboids assault the flyspeck town of Perfection, Nevada. Idiocy was rarely so charming, especially when combined with some of the most perfect practical effects ever committed to screen. A supporting cast of hicks, survivalists, and geologists make this one of the most rib-tickling horror comedies ever. – Richard WhittakerApril 4-9 -

Princess Mononoke (1997)
When OpenAI launched its AI image generator last week, fans of living legend Hayao Miyazaki overloaded the system creating memes that aped the style of his Studio Ghibli pictures – a lousy way to pay tribute to a true artist. A better option? Checking out the brand-new 4K restoration of his 1997 eco fable, Princess Mononoke. Boasting a cursed prince, a corrupted boar, a godly Forest Spirit, a feminist captain of industry, a human girl raised by wolves, and a million tiny kodama spirits clattering like bones, Princess Mononoke is a stunner: complex, thrilling, mournful, and illustrative of humans at their very best and worst.
