REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., Aug. 30, 2000
Peter Weir (The Truman Show) made this unsettling, atmospheric film early in his career, and it is still one of his most successful projects to date. The movie is an eerie mystery that incongruously occurs in the bright daylight sunshine. During a school outing in 1901 Australia, three schoolgirls and their teacher apparently vanish into thin air and the unsolved event mushrooms into a disturbingly mysterious phenomenon.
