Qmmunity Wants Deets on Local Gay Bars From Decades Past

By Beth Sullivan and Sarah Marloff, August 14, 2019, 4:30pm, Qmmunity

As part of our Aug. 9, 2019 Pride feature “The History of the LGBTQ Movement in Austin,” we compiled an inexhaustive list of the queer, lesbian, and gay bars this city both loves (oh hey Cheer Up Charlies) and has loved and lost (R.I.P. Bernadette’s).

Signifying, perhaps, the only time “too many” gay bars was a predicament, we noted it was an incomplete list due to time and space constraints. Since publication, several LGBTQmmunity members have commented or reached out to us about bars missing from the list, and we’re stoked about your feedback! It’s inspired us to compile an even bigger, queerer list – or keeping in the “Gay Place” tradition of Prides past, a “barchive” – complete with years active, addresses, and maybe a few tales of queer’d reminiscing or good ol’ gay bar dramarama.

So, if you remember a queer, lesbian, or gay bar that we didn't mention in "An Incomplete Compilation of the Gay Bars Austin Has Loved and Lost," please email [email protected] with the name, location (if you can remember), and any other info or anecdotes you’d like to share. We’d also love to see any snapshots if you have those, too.
