Pride in Austin is a little bit different than everywhere else. Across the country, most major cities celebrate Pride – an homage to the Stonewall Riots that spanned several days in June 1969 – in June.

In 2011, President Barack Obama officially declared June Pride Month to celebrate, honor, and support America’s queer and trans communities. But in Austin, for various reasons, Pride falls in August.
At Qmmunity, we don’t mind, because it only helps extend the city’s queer celebrations. But this summer, as the world pays tribute to Stonewall’s 50th anniversary, we’ve decided to go all out. Austin, after all, is home to three Pride celebrations – two of which bring the Pride Month spirit to town every June (looking at you QueerBomb and Austin Black Pride). So grab your glitter and choice footwear, because its gonna be a wild, v. queer ride this Summer of Pride. Below, we’ve rounded up this month’s Pride events. Of course, you can track all our listings at www.austinchronicle.com/events/qmmunity and there’s our dedicated Summer of Pride page too, but if that’s overwhelming you with queerness, we’ve distilled this month’s events down to the very gayest.
