Primary Run-Off Results: Early Voting Day Two

Early voting in the July 31 primary run-off continues on the brisk side of terrible, with turnout inching its way to 1.39% of registered voters in Travis County.

The first day early voting glut *cough* subsided, as there was drop in both mail-in in-person voting (unsurprising), but 3,500 ballots were cast yesterday, bringing total turnout to 8,317 with three days of early voting left.

With only five days of early voting, there are obviously concerns that people may miss their opportunity to express their democratic right. Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir just released a statement asking people to make their voting plans asap. She said, "The good news is that the short ballot will allow voters to breeze in and out of the polling place once they get there."

Unsurprisingly, the pitched battles between Ted Cruz and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst for US Senate, and Sen. Jeff Wentworth and Donna Campbell for Texas Senate, are driving up turnout on the GOP side. Clock up another 2,585 excited voters on that ballot, and expect a lot of close examination – especially in Wentworth's winding Senate District 25 – of which boxes performed well. Campbell's base is strongest in South-West Travis, while Wentworth needs to double down on his Bexar County base. With only 6,338 GOP votes cast in Travis in total, and many outside of those boxes outside of SD25, the only applicable term is "crapshoot."

Over on the Democratic side, turnout is still lower – not surprising, considering the only contentious local race is incumbent Precinct 2 Constable Adan Ballesteros and suspected DINO Michael Cargill. With 915 votes cast yesterday, that brings the total to a paltry 2,007.
