Harkening back to its German roots, a newer addition to the family of Verts kebap shops got into the spirit Thursday evening with some Oktoberfest fun, including traditional music, Live Oak Oktoberfest beer, and, of course, dudes in lederhosen.
Guests were treated to a free pint glass with every purchase of a Live Oak beer, while encouraged to enter a straight arm-stein holding contest. It was festive and simple fun. But the main event was clearly the döner kebap. If you haven't gotten a hold of one of these delicious sandwiches, inspired by uber-popular Berliner street food, do it soon.
Founded a couple of years back by two German-born UT students who missed their favorite, fast snack, Verts has grown into a chain with seven locations across Austin. Here's how the system works: choose your style of kebap, which comes on specially-baked bread, in a tortilla wrap, or bread-less in a bowl. Meat choices are the traditional beef and lamb mixture, sliced right off the rotating spit; chicken; or a vegan option of gluten-free potato, carrot, and herb patties. Then the choice is of how to creatively top the kebap with fresh veggies and handmade sauces. We went for the Original Kebap with lamb and beef, a spicy red vinaigrette, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cucumber. It was downright köstlich. Local breweries are celebrated here with Live Oak being in good company with 512 Brewing and Austin Beerworks.
The South Lamar location sits beneath new condos and shares commercial ground floor space with Barlata Tapas Bar. At first glance, parking does seem like a challenge. It’s not. Both the lot and the parking garage are free for Verts customers, so don’t let it deter you for even one moment from this terrific location and food. I almost went back again today.
