War on Women's Health

Reproductive Rights Under Fire: From the defunding of reproductive and preventative health care to draconian anti-choice laws engineered by extremists on the right, Texas has become ground zero for both the war on women’s health care and for the nationwide defense of women’s rights. The U.S. Supreme Court granted pro-choice advocates a historic victory in 2016 in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt by striking down two parts of the notorious House Bill 2 and forced state governments to show evidence of medical necessity when passing abortion laws.

However, HB 2 was not the first blast in the war on women's reproductive rights and it's certainly not the last. The state continues to grapple with a shredded health network and continued assaults on reproductive rights. HB 2, target of former Sen. Wendy Davis’s historic 2013 filibuster, has already shuttered roughly half of Texas abortion clinics. And Texas, like the rest of the country, faces the reign of President Trump, a misogynist who has condoned sexual assault toward women and supports the repeal of Roe v. Wade.

The Chronicle has been following the struggle for years, and what happens in Texas – both victories and defeats – often sets the pattern for the whole country.

Back in session, the GOP-dominated Texas Legislature is working to do everything from target Planned Parenthood to completely outlaw abortion – stay tuned for the fallout. Track the latest developments in the reproductive rights battle on this page, as well as @AustinChronicle and on Facebook.
