10) Rick Perry made it an entire year of going for light jogs without shooting anything I believe this to be true to the best of my knowledge, but we've still got a week left and Perry could use a bump in the polls.
9) Rick Barnes' agent got him an extension somehow Texas went with the interesting strategy of doubling down on something that's not working and it's actually paying off. The Kirk Gibson home-run of contract negotiations.
8) Longhorn Football became bowl eligible Within the span of a week the Horns had their first win against a ranked opponent (WVU) and a road win that sent them to a bowl game (OSU).
7) Formula One was kind of cool? People said it was cool. There were certainly a lot of rich and attractive people in town that weekend so I think it was probably cool. Admittedly, I don't know a lot about cars.
6) Austin SSC's record-setting seven consecutive days* without a fight literally started over an adult-league kickball game Put it on a plaque, erect a statue, this record will never be broken.
*I made this up. Might be less.
5) The X Games The craziest part of Austin's first X Games was 14-year-old skateboarder and show-off Tom Schaar landing a 900, making the rest of us super self-conscious about the fact that we couldn't say hi to a cute girl without violently falling down a flight of stairs until we were in college.
4) The Baby A's Hat Trick An Austin resident was served three purple margaritas at Baby Acapulco's by arriving 15 minutes before her friends and ordering one from the bartender. "See, that's the trick," the 27-year-old said.
3) The Texas Longhorns women's volleyball team The second-ranked Longhorns have been mowing through the competition on their way to a third-straight final four appearance. Please adjust this ranking to either No. 1 or No. 5 based on whether or not they end up winning the national championship by the time you read this.
2) Texas Stars win their first Calder Cup I bet it chapped a lot of hoser ass to have a team from Texas win the AHL title. Sorry y'all.
1) University of Texas hires Charlie Strong After publicly flirting with Nick Saban and Art Briles, the Longhorns made a solid move by bringing in the former Louisville head coach. Strong's been enormously successful everywhere he's been, and the fact that Red McCombs hated the hire should just reinforce that it was absolutely the right decision.
